With the absence of light pollution and the tranquility of the desert, you can enjoy a peaceful night’s sleep under the blanket of stars, waking up to the breathtaking sunrise over the dunes. From camel rides and sandboarding to traditional music and dancing, a night in the desert is an unforgettable experience that should not be missed.
When planning for a desert experience near Marrakech, it is essential to consider the best time to go and what to bring along. The most suitable time to visit the desert is during the cooler months between October and April, where the temperature is more manageable and comfortable for outdoor activities.
As you prepare for your desert adventure, you should pack lightweight and loose-fitting clothing, a hat, and sunglasses to protect yourself from the intense sun rays during the day and the cold temperature at night. Additionally, comfortable and sturdy footwear is crucial, especially if you plan to go on a camel ride or hike on the sand dunes.
For instance, getting to the desert varies as there are multiple destinations to visit, but with similar experiences. Firstly there is the Merzouga/Sahara Desert. Merzouga is the gateway to the Sahara, with some sightseeing to experience. :
Ultimately, there is Agafay which is another desert not far from Marrakech, with experiences such as stargazing and traditional Berber entertainment. Finally, the Zagora Desert, which is the third desert to experience near Marrakech.
There is an abundance of desert night experiences to enjoy on your getaway to Marrakech, but listed are the most important ones to enjoy.
Firstly, we start off with the Merzouga/Sahara Desert nights. This experience consists of multiple days in the desert, with multiple locations to visit such as, Ait Benhaddou, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, taking a camel ride through the Merzouga dunes, traditional camp in tents, and many more activities.
Secondly, spending a night at Agafay. Spending the night at Agafay has it’s own uniqueness as you immerse on the trip via a private mini van. Furthermore, you go to the camp site and set up for the night. You are welcomed with some traditional tea, and get settled into your tent.
Despite being in the desert, the campsite includes a swimming pool to cool of the desert’s heat, as well as traditional Berber entertainment provided during the night. Last but not least, the Zagora Desert.
The Zagora desert experience is nothing short of the previous ones, In fact, this experience is one of the best as you visit Ait Benhaddou just like the first experience, but to get to your campsite, you will embark on a camel ride through sunset before arriving at camp.
The following day you get served traditional Berber breakfast before you embark on your camel ride back to be taken back to your destination.
One might wonder what to expect there, but no need for expectations as any of these previously mentioned experiences will exceed your expectations.
In a nutshell, most of the activities one will experience there include, Camel Trek, Quad Biking, Star gazing, Traditional Berber entertainment, and sightseeing. All the experiences are full of fun and adventure, but depending on the time available, consider the most suitable option.
In general, it is highly recommended to bring your own snacks to the camp as one might crave some late night munchies, but other than that meals will be provided by the hosts at the campsite.
One last thing to consider bringing is stomach ache medicine, as the food might be a bit heavy on the stomach, and also to avoid any problems concerning stomach or food. Also, keep in mind, it’s not likely that they serve vegan options, therefore, ask before heading onto your desert night experience.
